Event narrative

A large tree was blown down in Huron near the intersection of 7th Street and Dakota Avenue. Over 1000 utility customers were without power at the peak of the event.

A west-to-east oriented broken line of thunderstorms along the South Dakota-Nebraska border near sunrise on July 23 rapidly lifted north the remainder of the morning in response to a strong low-level jet. Damaging wind gusts were observed across portions of Aurora and Beadle Counties with the Huron Regional Airport (KHON) reporting a wind gust of 82 mph. Tree damage was reported across Huron and Plankinton, South Dakota with isolated structural damage in other parts of the area.
