Drought — Frio, Texas
2025-07-01 to 2025-07-31 · Frio, Texas
Event narrative
The southern central part of South-Central Texas did not get the excessive rainfall that the Hill Country and Southern Edwards Plateau did and the drought only improved slightly. Atascosa, Frio, and Kinney counties improved from Extreme (D3) drought category to Severe (D2) drought. The other counties in D2 or worse were unchanged. Medina stayed in Exceptional (D4) drought, Bexar stayed in D3, and Val Verde in D2. The excessive rain during the month was somewhat hit or miss with the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone. Overall, it was down 1.8 feet for July leaving it 27.4 feet below normal. Otherwise, area reservoirs were up. Lake Amistad was up 6.0 feet, but was still 60.8 feet below normal. Medina Lake was up 13.1 feet, but was 79.6 feet below normal. At the end of the month the seven-day average streamflow was normal on the Nueces, Frio, and lower San Antonio Rivers. Streamflow was below (10%-24%) normal on the Medina and upper San Antonio Rivers. Many locations encouraged voluntary water restrictions, and the following had mandatory restrictions: San Antonio stage 4, Universal City stage 3, and Del Rio stage 2. None of the counties in D2 or worse drought had burn bans in effect at the end of the month.
