Drought — Kinney, Texas

2025-08-01 to 2025-08-31 · Kinney, Texas

Event narrative

Only one county changed drought category in August. There was enough rain in Medina County to improve from Exceptional (D4) drought to Extreme (D3) drought. All of the other counties stayed the same. Bexar County remained in D3. Atascosa, Frio, Kinney, and Val Verde all stayed in Severe (D2) drought. At the end of the month, the seven-day average streamflow was much below (<10%) normal on the Atascosa River; below (10%-24%) normal on the lower Pecos River; and normal (25%-75%) on the Frio, Medina, and San Antonio Rivers. The Edwards Aquifer dropped 4.5 feet and was 29.4 feet below normal. Lake Amistad increased for a second month, but only by +0.2 feet and was still 60.6 feet below conservation pool elevation. Medina Lake dropped again by 1.0 foot and was 80.6 feet below conservation elevation. Most water providers encouraged conservation while San Antonio and Universal City imposed stage 3 restrictions and Del Rio had stage 2. Of the counties in D2 or worse drought, Atascosa, Bexar, Medina, and Frio had outdoor burn bans in effect at the end of the month.
