Event narrative

A buoy about two-miles NNE of Sandusky, just west of Cedar Point, recorded a peak straight-line wind gust of 48-mph from thunderstorms.

Wider weather episode

During the afternoon through early evening of the 26th, a front extended east-southeastward from the Detroit area and across Lake Erie to northwest PA, and moved little. The front separated a very warm and humid air mass to the south from a somewhat cooler and less humid air mass to the north. Along and near the front, scattered multicell showers and thunderstorms developed and persisted generally east-southeastward. Some of these storms produced gale-force peak straight-line wind gusts along the southwestern shore of Lake Erie.

During the late morning through early evening of the 27th, the front drifted generally eastward from central Lake Erie and the OH/PA border area and vicinity to far-western NY and western PA. Simultaneously, the front's parent surface low wobbled east-northeastward from central portions of MI's Upper Peninsula to just east of Lake Superior. Behind the warm front, a line of multicell thunderstorms persisted generally eastward across northeast OH and generated isolated gale-force to-storm-force straight-line peak wind gusts along the Lake Erie shore during the early afternoon. Farther behind the front and during the evening hours, a compact line of multicell thunderstorms persisted generally eastward across northwest OH and vicinity and generated a gale-force straight-line peak wind gust in the Huron area. All of these storms occurred amidst moderate effective bulk shear and primarily moderate MUCAPE within the warm and moist sector.
