Event narrative

Local broadcast media (KRGV Channel 5 News) provided video and still photos of street flooding in Weslaco, with 1 to 2 feet of water depth (estimated). Rainfall of 2.4 fell with a cluster of storms, including more than 2 inches in 90 minutes, at the Mid Valley Airport in Weslaco. Similar rainfall totals were estimated in urban/poor drainage locations west to Pharr.

Wider weather episode

A tropical disturbance which originated near Honduras on August 13th pushed through the southwest Gulf of Mexico and ultimately moved onshore just south of the Mouth of the Rio Grande, crossing southwest Cameron and southeast Hidalgo County before becoming more diffuse, on August 15th.

Widespread showers and a few thunderstorms accompanied the disturbance (known as AL-98) across eastern Hidalgo and portions of Cameron County, where more than 2 of rain fell in less than two hours from late morning through early afternoon. Minor urban/poor drainage flooding occurred in southern Hidalgo County, and may have also stretched into southwest Cameron County.
