Event narrative

Montana mesonet station Dog Gun Lake E measured sustained winds, averaged over 2 hours, of 50 mph. Additional sites including Two Medicine Bridge and Browning (MTDOT) measured gusts in excess of 58 mph, but short of 75 mph. The peak gust at Dog Gun Lake E was 74 mph.

Wider weather episode

Strengthening cross barrier flow, increased ridgetop stability, and a strengthening pressure gradient combined to result in a period of strong winds along the Rocky Mountain Front beginning early morning October 19. Further south a sufficient pressure gradient allowed for localized high winds at the northern end of the Madison River Valley (Norris Hill).
