Wider weather episode

A strong low pressure system across western Kansas lifted northeastward into Iowa March 29-30. Given a very moist airmass and ample lift, precipitation rapidly blossomed across South Dakota and southern Minnesota during the afternoon of March 29. Precipitation initially fell as rain, but quickly transitioned to snow for areas west of the James River Valley as temperatures dropped below freezing. Two to five inches of heavy, wet snow accumulated in these areas through the late evening. Farther east, a mix of snow and ice accumulated across parts of Brookings County into the early morning hours of March 30.
