Event narrative

Flash flooding occurred early morning in Evansville. Fire officials reported several vehicles in the water on Virginia Street with a water rescue underway. Social media posts a car lost its front wheel hitting a manhole cover pushed open by water at Washington Avenue/Kentucky Avenue. The westbound Lloyd Expressway exit to Garvin St was closed due to flooding, and Maxwell Road had a section of road covered by water. Hourly rainfall totals peaked at around an inch, with early morning rainfall totals estimated by radar at 2-2.5 inches. Flash flooding transitioned to lingering areal flooding issues through mid-morning.

Wider weather episode

Low pressure centered over SEMO slowly drifted eastward into the day. Tropical moisture streamed northeastward into the Quad State early morning on the 7th pushing dew points into the upper 60s to near 70 and precipitable water values of up to 1.75-2. Instability and shear were limited during the morning, preventing any severe thunderstorm development. An extended cold front from Quebec to Texas had crossed into the Quad State earlier, setting up a convergence zone near the Ohio River. Upon reaching the Ohio, showers tracked more east-northeasterly, producing training heavy rainfall near the IN/KY border. Flash flooding developed in Evansville, while rainfall of five inches in Spencer County produced widespread areal flooding on roads.
