Event narrative

Increasingly gusty winds developed as a compact, but deepening, low pressure system approached the Virginia coast on September 16. Occasional wind gusts over 45 mph started around noon on September 16, with peak winds in the late afternoon and evening. A peak wind gust of 47 mph (41 kt) was observed at the Assateague Island RAWS site. Winds quickly decreased overnight.

Wider weather episode

An area of low pressure brought gusty winds to coastal portions of the lower Maryland Eastern Shore on September 16. Winds increased substantially and peaked in the afternoon and evening hours of September 16 as the low tracked northwest into the lower Chesapeake Bay and eventually moved inland across eastern Virginia. Frequent wind gusts of around 45 mph were observed along the immediate coast of the Maryland Beaches, with peak wind gusts near 50 mph.
