Event narrative

A coastal low lingered near the North Carolina and Virginia coastline on September 16, slowly moving northwest into the Chesapeake Bay by the evening of September 16. This low brought a prolonged period of elevated northerly winds across the Chesapeake Bay, resulting in major coastal flooding across Virginia Beach. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel reached 6.14 ft MLLW at 354 PM EST on September 16. Lynnhaven Inlet reached 6.06 ft MLLW at 412 PM EST on September 16. Additionally, there was a report of two to three feet of seawater in Virginia Beach, resulting in stranded and submerged vehicles in the Linkhorn Park area of Virginia Beach just off of Pacific Avenue at 425 PM EST. Another report was received at 357 PM EST indicating one to two feet of seawater flooding in the Wolfsnare subdivision of Virginia Beach with neighborhood roads impassable.
