Event narrative

A peak wind gust of 60 mph was recorded at the Kaiyuh Slough RAWS site (KAIA2) near Kaltag at 0921AKST on October 12th. The ASOS site at Galena (PAGA) reported numerous wind gusts exceeding 50 mph. Winds gusted to 71 mph at the USArray station (J19KX) in Poorman, 45 miles south Ruby. The Shaktoolik River RAWS station (SHKA2) recorded a wind gust of 93 mph at 0821AKST. The Nulato Airport AWOS (PANU) recorded a wind gust of 63 mph at 0751AKST.

In Koyukuk, high winds downed trees and caused a power outage. In Nulato, several trees were downed; trees fell on houses, sheds, and the post office. Roof and siding panels were peeled or ripped off structures.

Wider weather episode

Ex-Typhoon Halong brought high winds and severe coastal flooding to the West Coast of Alaska from October 11th to 13th. The storm caused severe coastal flooding in the Kuskokwim River Delta and high water levels extending north to the Yukon River Delta. These coastal areas all reported high wind gusts near or upwards of 70 to 80 mph. Inland areas as well as the Eastern Norton Sound saw impacts from damaging winds, with gusts upwards of 50 to 60 mph, causing damage to roofs and siding, downed trees, and damaged power lines leading to outages. Significant wave activity on the Koyukuk River near Huslia damaged, swept away, or sank several boats.
