Event narrative

The USARRAY mesonet (K13KX) located atop of Kusilvak Mountain reported an initial verifying observation of 53 kt peak wind at 11:45 local time on October 7th. The peak observation at this site was a 61 mph wind gust at 19:45 local time on October 7th. The hazard did not verify at lower observations due to winds not fully mixing down to the surface.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system over the Western Aleutian Islands moved into the central Bering Sea the night of Sunday, October 6th, rapidly intensifying into a strong coastal storm. This system caused widespread significant flooding and coastal erosion across the Yukon Delta, Seward Peninsula, and Kotzebue Sound coastlines. Additionally, widespread gusty winds were felt across the Yukon Delta, St. Lawrence Island, Bering Strait, and Interior Alaska Range passes.
