Event narrative

Strong winds began during the mid morning hours on the 19th and continued more or less steadily through the mid evening hours before diminishing quickly behind the cold front. Coastal locations consistently gusted between 55 and 60 mph. Peak power outages were around 25% of customer out in the county.

Wider weather episode

On the 18th a strong surface low pressure was crossing the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes. By midday on the 19th the low took up a position in southern Quebec and had deepened to around 976 mb. An initial cold air dam over northern New England was overwhelmed by strong warm air advection and strong southerly wind gusts began during the daylight hours. During the mid afternoon on the 19th the strongest wind gusts were observed along the western Maine coast, as well as some of the areas north of the western Maine mountains where downsloping was occurring.
