An NWS Employee reported 11.8 inches of snow with sleet in Stony Brook. The following subsequent snowfall observations were reported; 14.5 inches in Fort Salonga 1.5 SSE, 13.5 inches in 1 NNW East Setauket, 13.0 inches in Mount Sinai, 13.0 inches in 1 ENE Smithtown, 12.9 inches in Centerport, 12.8 inches in Commack, 12.5 inches in Nesconset, 12.5 inches in Hauppauge, 12.0 inches in Mount Sinai, 11.9 inches in Nesconset, 11.8 inches in 1 SSW East Northport, 11.5 inches in Setauket-East Setauket 2.1 WNW, 11.5 inches in 1 E South Huntington, 11.5 inches in 1 W Hauppauge, 11.5 inches in Northport, 11.3 inches in 1 N Greenlawn, 11.1 inches in 2 S Commack, 10.5 inches in 1 NE Hauppauge, 10.5 inches in 1 SE East Northport, 10.1 inches in 2 N Smithtown, 10.0 inches in Copiague, 9.8 inches in Stony Brook, 9.5 inches in 1 ENE Commack, 9.5 inches in 1 SE Hauppauge, 9.0 inches in 1 ENE Commack.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system emerged out of the Southern Plains and Texas and rode northeast through the Tennessee Valley and the Appalachians, before emerging just off the New Jersey coast. This produced a heavy snowfall across all of Southeastern New York, with sleet, some of it heavy across a large portion of the region.
