Primary low pressure developed south of the Gulf of Maine during the 2nd...then intensified while tracking southeast of the Gulf of Maine and east of Nova Scotia through the night of the 2nd into the morning of the 3rd. A weaker secondary low tracked along the Downeast coast through the 2nd...along a coastal front...tightening the temperature gradient along the coastal boundary. Warmer air was drawn onshore to the south of the coastal boundary allowing the snow to mix with...or change to...rain along the Downeast coast limiting snow accumulations there. Snow expanded across the region through the morning of the 2nd. Snow then persisted into the early morning hours of the 3rd before ending late. The heaviest snow occurred across interior Downeast areas from southern Penobscot...across interior Hancock...to northern and central portions of Washington counties. Snow totals in this region generally ranged from 4 to 7 inches...with local totals to around 9 inches. Snow totals diminished northward across the remainder of the region...tapering to 1 to 2 inches across the Saint John River Valley of northern Aroostook county. Warning criteria snow accumulations occurred during the late evening of the 2nd.
