Wider weather episode
Following an additional moderate/heavy snowfall during the 13th's midday to evening, most central Indiana counties were covered by a generally 3 to 6 inch snow depth. Skies cleared quickly after midnight going into the 14th as broad arctic surface high pressure began building into the region. The center of this 1042-millibar ridge tracked slowly on the 14th from the central Plains to the Ohio Valley.
West-northwest winds gusting to around 15-20 mph across central Indiana ushered in subzero temperatures by pre-dawn on the 14th with lows down to mainly -10 to -5 degrees across northern and central zones; these breezes led the first, primary period of criteria wind chills for 27, mainly central to northern central Indiana, counties as well as isolated zones in southeastern central Indiana. Wind chills fell to -20 to -32 within the 14th 100-1200 EST period, except in Montgomery County where criteria wind chills occurred through 1700 EST.
Readings on the 14th, in counties that had observed extreme wind chills, rebounded to 3 to 11 degrees. Winds diminished by early evening, allowing temperatures to plummet under clear skies. Temperatures falling as low as -4 to -15 degrees led a second period of criteria wind chills in 9 counties north/west of Indianapolis, within the 14th 1900 to 15th 800 EST period, although extreme wind chills ended in most zones by 400 EST. Winds were generally under 10 mph through this secondary period.
