Waterspout — Buzzards Bay, Atlantic North
2008-08-11 · near Round Hill Point, Buzzards Bay, Atlantic North
Event narrative
A National Weather Service Damage Survey Team determined that a waterspout occurred in Apponagansett Bay. The waterspout produced damage in two locations roughly two miles apart and was approximately 25 yards wide. It travelled north to south even though the parent thunderstorm was moving to the northeast. The waterspout appears to have originated near the Apponagansett River shore at the end of Day Street and travelled about 30 yards. It moved over the water weakening as it moved down Apponagansett Bay and over the Padanaram Bridge. It produced a second area of damage south of the bridge around 100 yards long. Seven boats were overturned and at least partially sunk by the waterspout off of Bayview Avenue. The waterspout was close enough to shore that strong inflow winds resulted in the downing of three trees right on the shore line and minor damage to a property at the end of Day Street.
Wider weather episode
