According to the Cedar Valley Daily Times newspaper in Vinton, a vehicle accident on snowy roads caused the indirect death of a female passenger in one of the vehicles. The accident happened on Highway 38 near Monticello at about 645 pm CST. At the time of the accident about 1 to 2 inches of snow had fallen.

An upper air disturbance moving across the region produced a six to nine hour period of light to moderate snow on February 13-14, 2009. A band of 3 to 4 inches of snow was common across northeast Iowa and northwest Illinois. However, around 5 inches fell west of Interstate 380 from about Cedar Rapids to Marengo to What Cheer. The heaviest amount reported was 5.5 inches at Marengo in Iowa county. A vehicle accident on a snowy road on the evening of February 13, near Monticello in Jones county, caused an indirect death to a passenger in one of the vehicles. In Cedar Rapids, the police department reported six crashes on snowy roads that sent nine people to the hospital.
