According to the Cedar Valley Daily Times newspaper in Vinton, the Cedar Rapids police department reported six crashes on snowy roads that caused nine indirect injuries during the snow event. Trained spotters measured 3 to 5 inches of snow in the Cedar Rapids area.
Wider weather episode
An upper air disturbance moving across the region produced a six to nine hour period of light to moderate snow on February 13-14, 2009. A band of 3 to 4 inches of snow was common across northeast Iowa and northwest Illinois. However, around 5 inches fell west of Interstate 380 from about Cedar Rapids to Marengo to What Cheer. The heaviest amount reported was 5.5 inches at Marengo in Iowa county. A vehicle accident on a snowy road on the evening of February 13, near Monticello in Jones county, caused an indirect death to a passenger in one of the vehicles. In Cedar Rapids, the police department reported six crashes on snowy roads that sent nine people to the hospital.
