Event narrative
Rain changed to freezing rain, causing light icing before the precipitation quickly changed to snow. Snow accumulated 5 to 8 inches. The icing and subsequent snow accumulation made travel very difficult, with several vehicle accidents and numerous vehicles sliding into ditches. One of the accidents resulted in a fatality and a person was injured in another accident.
Wider weather episode
Widespread rain and freezing rain developed and changed to snow on February 24th, with snow continuing through the morning of February 25th. The heaviest snow was along the Missouri River in far southeast South Dakota, while the greatest ice accumulations were between Brookings and Sioux Falls.
