Wider weather episode

A winter storm system over Iowa weakened as it moved northeast into northern Illinois. Waves of moisture in advance of the storm moved across Southeast Michigan on Sunday, February the 25th and during the early morning hours of the 26th. Extreme northwest portions of Midland County received mostly snow, with spotters reporting 9 inches on the ground by 0600EST on the 26th. Farther south, warmer air aloft resulted in a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. A glaze of ice coated roadways, sidewalks, and trees. Between one and two tenths of an inch of freezing rain and up to a half inch of sleet fell across northeastern portions of Wayne County and nearly all of Macomb and St Clair Counties, where dozens of accidents were reported. Deceptively icy roads also resulted in scores of accidents along and north of I-69, especially across Saginaw County. A teenage girl was killed (indirectly) when she lost control of her vehicle on an icy road in Davison Township Sunday evening.
