Freezing Fog — Todd, Kentucky

Direct deaths

Wider weather episode

Dense freezing fog occurred over most of western Kentucky as a result of high pressure over the Lower Ohio and Mid Mississippi Valleys. Light winds, high humidity, and areas of clear sky associated with this high caused dense fog to form. The dense fog occurred at temperatures below freezing, producing a thin coating of ice on some road surfaces. Visibility was below one quarter mile for much of the time. The dense fog area covered all of western Kentucky except the Henderson area and the Murray to Hickman corridor. A couple of major vehicle accidents occurred on black ice. In Muhlenberg County, a vehicle overturned. A fatal accident occurred in Todd County just northwest of Trenton, where a semi hauling milk overturned in dense fog. The 46-year-old driver of the semi approached an intersection and failed to negotiate a turn because of very dense fog. The truck overturned several times, trapping the driver inside. The driver died of injuries sustained in the crash (indirect fatality).
