Wider weather episode
Cold air surging into southern New England in the wake of a departing storm brought damaging winds to much of the Bay State. Amateur radio operators and trained spotters reported many instances of downed or uprooted trees and large branches, several of which blocked roadways or fell on vehicles. In Deerfield, there was one fataility attributed to the high winds, when a motorcyclist was struck by a falling tree. Although many locations saw wind gusts on the order of 45 to 55 mph, peak gusts as high as 61 mph were reported in Stow and Ipswich, and 58 mph in Marstons Mills on Cape Cod.
