Event narrative
Although snowfall was lighter across northeast Wisconsin, it produced slippery roads across the area. A teenager driving his five siblings and a neighbor to school in a minivan lost control of the vehicle on a snow-covered section of U.S. Highway 8 in Goodman. Two pickup trucks then struck the minivan, ejecting 4 of its occupants. The driver's brother and neighbor were killed in the accident. The driver's 12 year old brother was sent to a Green Bay hospital with serious injuries and his 5 year old sister was hospitalized in Iron Mountain, MI. The rest of the minivan's occupants and 3 occupants of the pickup trucks were treated at and released.
Wider weather episode
Low pressure that moved across Illinois into lower Michigan produced rain, and later snow, in northeast Wisconsin. The rain quickly changed to snow when the winds shifted, bringing much colder air from Canada into the the area.
Snowfall totals were in the 4 to 7 inch range across several counties. The highest totals included 7.0 inches in Suring (southern Oconto Co.) and 6.0 inches at both Suamico (Brown Co.) and the west side of De Pere (Brown Co.).
