Wider weather episode
This Saturday afternoon and evening featured the first Winter Weather Advisory of the 2010-2011 season for South Central Nebraska, as an expansive area of freezing drizzle enveloped the region, resulting in a thin coating of ice and several traffic accidents, including a multiple fatality accident on Interstate 80 in York County.
Leading up to this freezing drizzle event, the entire area spent the day stuck under an extensive low cloud deck, holding temperatures in the upper 20s to lower 30s. In the mid levels of the atmosphere, broad southwesterly flow dominated the region, with minor disturbances passing through. As evening fell, one of these weak disturbances promoted increasing low level southerly flow, resulting in the onset of freezing drizzle that lasted well into the overnight hours.
