Wider weather episode

A low pressure system that moved off the Virginia coast helped spread snow across Maryland on the 8th. Snowfall averaged 1 to 3 inches. Periods of snow began falling between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. EST on the 8th. The snow did mix with some sleet and rain in Caroline and Talbot Counties during the morning. Precipitation ended by the early afternoon on the 8th. Untreated roadways were treacherous, especially during the early morning. An elderly woman in Unionville (Talbot County) died from exposure after she slipped and fell on the snow and ice and hit her head.

Representative snowfall included 3.0 inches in Millington (Kent County), 2.7 inches in Greensburg (Caroline County), 2.5 inches in Denton (Caroline County), 2.0 inches in Galena (Kent County) and 1.3 inches in Centreville (Queen Anne's County) and 1.0 inch in Easton (Talbot County). The wintry precipitation was caused by a low pressure system that moved southeast from the Ohio Valley on the evening of the 7th, across the Carolinas overnight on the 7th and then turned to the northeast. The low passed just east of Virginia Beach, Virginia at 4 a.m. EST on the 8th, moved northeast and was just east of the Delaware coast at 1 p.m. EST on the 8th. It started merging with another low that was moving across Pennsylvania. The merged lows intensified rapidly, but also started to accelerate and by 7 p.m. EST on the 8th, the single low was already south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
