Event narrative

A combination of saturated ground and gusty winds caused a tree to fall across Interstate 40, about 3 miles southeast of Marion. Several cars collided with the tree before it was cleared.

Wider weather episode

Widespread moderate to heavy rain fell across western North Carolina, starting during the afternoon hours of the 5th, and lasting through the morning hours of the 6th. Upslope flow yielded the highest rainfall totals over the southern mountains where 3 to 6 inches of rain was common. Some river and stream flooding was triggered by the heavy rain.
