Wider weather episode
Rain gradually began to change to snow, first in the higher elevations of the central mountains, followed by the northern foothills and the northwest Piedmont. Although snow was heavy at times in the Piedmont, warm ground temperatures and rain mixing in at times resulted in little accumulation. The brief period of heavy snow was accompanied by occasional lightning and thunder in the Piedmont. Total accumulations ranged from trace amounts in the central mountain valleys to 1-3 inches across the higher elevations, to generally 2 inches or less across the northern foothills and northwest Piedmont.
