Four inches of snow was reported in the higher terrain near Hayesville.

Wider weather episode

Moderate to heavy snow fell across the higher terrain in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee as well as the Smoky Mountains from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon. The heavy snow event was the result of the passage of a deep upper level low pressure system. Much of these higher terrain areas picked up three to six inches of snow while the highest peaks in the Smoky Mountains recorded snow totals as high as ten to fifteen inches.
