Wider weather episode
Northwest flow aloft was well established over the Lower Ohio Valley during the morning hours on August 31st. Just above the surface, light southwesterly winds brought modified Gulf moisture across the Commonwealth and southern Indiana. Strong instability developed by afternoon, even in the presence of morning convection associated with a southward moving outflow boundary that brought strong storms to the Bluegrass Region. After this first round of storms, strong convection developed during the afternoon hours across southern Indiana and central Kentucky east of Interstate 65. Several of these storms became severe as several wet microbursts brought widespread damaging winds to southeastern Indiana and the western Bluegrass Region.
