Event narrative
The airport at Seward measured 4.47 inches of rainfall between October 27-28, 2013. This caused the Lowell Creek diversion tunnel outlet stream to become filled with gravel from the creek that washed down from the mountainside in the heavy rainfall. The result was damage to the bridge over the road as flood waters topped the bridge.
Wider weather episode
A strong low in Bristol Bay on October 24th moved into northwest Alaska as the next low in a series of lows approached Bristol Bay. This set the pattern of lows in the eastern Bering Sea that kept South Central Alaska in a frontal zone for multiple days. This weather front had a strong pressure gradient along it and a long fetch of warm air with a subtropical connection. The storm peaked on October 27th and early on the 28th before finally pushing northward and out of the area the afternoon of the 28th.
