Event narrative
The temperatures soared into the eighties for the first time in the 2012 summer season and lasted a few days. The above normal temperatures produced significant snow-melt from a above normal snow pack due to cold spring temperatures. The snow-melt runoff produced flooding along the Taiya River and inundated portions of the Chillkoot Trial with up to two feet of water in places. The river gauge crested at 17.2 FT with the moderate flood stage established at 17.0 FT.
Wider weather episode
First extended period of above normal temperatures of the season produced moderate flooding along the Taiya River area from snowmelt of the snow pack at higher elevations.
