Light freezing rain, mixing occasionally with sleet, developed over the North Carolina mountains during the late evening and continued off and on through the overnight. Warming temperatures from the southwest forced a transition to rain in most areas after midnight, although freezing rain lingered along the eastern escarpment until just after sunrise on the 26th. Total ice accumulation ranged from trace amounts in the vicinity of the Balsams to near 1/4 inch in areas along the eastern Blue Ridge escarpment. Very slick roads were reported in the northern mountains.
