An arctic cold front blasted through the western Carolinas during the morning of the 6th, bringing gusty winds and the coldest air mass to have affected the region since 1994. By early evening, winds of 10 to 20 mph, with stronger gusts combined with temperatures falling into the 20s and teens to produce wind chill values below 0 across the South Carolina mountains. Wind chills across the higher elevations likely reached -15 or lower briefly on the night of the 6th. Although wind gradually diminished overnight, low temperatures on the 7th ranged from a little below zero above 3000 feet to the single digits across the Piedmont and foothills.
