Dime sized hail fell.

Thunderstorms with damaging winds and frequent lightning moved through Northern Virginia between 5 and 9 PM EDT on the 1st. In Loudoun County, trees and wires were downed. Lightning struck several structures including the 911 system which was temporarily knocked off the air. A tree that was struck by lightning fell onto a car in Leesburg. In Fairfax County, two trees were downed in the Yacht Haven section of Mt. Vernon. Downed power lines blocked Route 7 near George Marshall High School between the beltway and Route 66. Trees fell onto an apartment building along Route 7 two miles east of Tyson's Corner. A 62 MPH gust was recorded by an automated sensor in Lorton. Dime sized hail fell in the city of Fairfax. In Fauquier County, numerous trees and power lines were downed in and around Warrenton. A 40 MPH wind gust was estimated in Opal. In Prince William County, a 62 MPH wind gust was reported at the Manassas Airport. Numerous trees and power lines were downed in Manassas, Woodbridge, Montclair, Independent Hill, and elsewhere across the country. Quantico AWOS recorded a wind gust of 66 MPH. In Spotsylvania County, several homes were struck and damaged by lightning. One man in a home near the Route 17 bypass on the west side of Fredericksburg was injured by lightning when electricity passed through the structure. The 29-year-old victim who had been struck by lightning before reported tingling all over his body and could not move for a while. The lightning strike also scorched some drywall in the home. High winds downed a tree onto Mine Road near Four Mile Fork and several trees were downed just west of Fredericksburg.
