Heavy Snow — Blackfoot Region, Montana

2002-06-08 to 2002-06-10 · Blackfoot Region, Montana

Wider weather episode

A powerful, late season snow storm brought heavy wet snow to a large part of western Montana for a three day period, mainly for elevations above 5000 feet. Snow was reported as low as 4000 feet in west central Montana before the storm moved well east of the divide. The hardest hit area was Glacier National Park where 3 to 4 feet of snow fell, with reports of 8 feet on the east side of the park, creating many avalanches and power outages. Travel was restricted to emergency traffic only along Highway 2 over Marias Pass. Some snowfall amounts during the event included: 12 inches at Hoodoo Basin and North Fork Elk Creek, 14 inches at Warm Springs RAWS, 17 inches at Point Six, 40 inches at Pike Creek, and 57 inches at Badger Pass in Flathead County. Several temperature records were broken in the days following the storm event.
