Wider weather episode

Showers and thunderstorms associated with the outer bands of Hurricane Arthur produced strong (gale force) wind gusts off the Cape May County Atlantic coastal waters as well as in lower Delaware Bay on the morning of the 4th. While the convective related wind gusts occurred during the morning, synoptic scale gale force wind gusts continued in Delaware Bay through the afternoon of the 4th.

Hurricane Arthur formed east of Florida and moved northeast along the Atlantic Seaboard. The hurricane made landfall over the Shackleford Banks of North Carolina during the evening of the 3rd. Arthur moved across Pamlico Sound in North Carolina before moving through North Carolina's Outer Banks early on July 4th. After Arthur re-emerged over the Atlantic Ocean (moved in a northeast direction), it found a more inhospitable environment and slowly started to weaken. Arthur's closest pass to the area waters was about 110 miles southeast of Fenwick Island, Delaware at 930 a.m. EDT on the 4th.
