Event narrative
A combination of light snow, which developed in advance of an approaching area of low pressure, and road temperatures around freezing, created slippery conditions for motorists across portions of northern Indiana. Numerous accidents occurred, especially in portions of Elkhart county, where at least 1 fatality and 4 injuries were reported. A female driver (age unavailable) was killed the passenger of a pickup truck when the driver lost control and collided with a semi truck on US 6, north of Syracuse. The driver of the truck and semi, as well as another passenger in the truck were sent to local hospitals for treatment. IN a seperate incident on the US 20 bypass near US 33, a 9 car accident occurred. Only one serious injury was reported when a man exited his vehicle to check for damage and was struck by a passing motorist. Accumulations were generally on the light side through much of the day but began to pick up during the evening hours. Generally 1 to 4 inches of snow was reported during this time frame with the heaviest snow falling into March 1st.
