Storm Surge/Tide — Coastal Collier County, Florida

2016-06-06 to 2016-06-07 · Coastal Collier County, Florida

Event narrative

Storm surge and residual higher than normal tides with the passage of Tropical Storm Colin led to 1 to 2 feet of seawater submerging several places in Goodland on Marco Island in Collier County, adjacent to Goodland Bay. Portions of State Route 92 on the mainland between US 41 and the Bay were underwater, as well as Goodland Drive, leading from the community to the mainland. Water along these roads blocked access from Goodland to the mainland and the remainder of Marco Island, isolating the community. Docks at the Goodland Boat Park were also briefly submerged.

Wider weather episode

Tropical Depression 3 developed over the southern Gulf of Mexico late in the day on June 5th, and strengthened into Tropical Storm Colin as it moved across the eastern Gulf of Mexico during the day on June 6th. The storm produced a few feet of storm surge as it moved parallel to the west coast of Florida, leading to roadway flooding in portions of Collier County.
