Event narrative
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported numerous trees snapped or uprooted by winds on the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge. In one half acre area where the damage was greatest, all of the trees were blown down.
Wider weather episode
A very moist and moderately unstable airmass over the region, combined with a series of short waves moving over the state in a persistent northwesterly upper-level flow, resulted in scattered severe thunderstorms.
