Winter Weather — Northern Jackson, North Carolina

2018-01-29 to 2018-01-30 · Northern Jackson, North Carolina

Wider weather episode

A strong upper level disturbance and associated cold front swept across the mountains during the late evening, bringing cold air and moisture, with snow initially developing in the higher elevations before snow levels quickly dropped to the valley floors. After the cold front passed, strong northwest winds pushing cold air and moisture up the western slopes of the Appalachians resulted in a continuation of snow showers across the Tennessee border counties through the overnight before the snow tapered off to flurries around sunrise. Measurable snowfall was generally limited to the high elevations (above 3500 feet or so) roughly southwest of I-26, while accumulations were a little more evenly distributed across the northern mountains. Total accumulations of 2-5 were reported throughout these areas, with locally higher amounts of up to 7 inches across the high peaks and ridge tops, and across portions of Avery County.
