Wider weather episode
A strong Texas 'norther turned a cool December 31st into a brisk and cold New Year's Eve turn of the calendar, as temperatures crashed into the mid 30s to lower 40s across the ranches north of the populated Rio Grande Valley with wind chill values in the mid 20s to lower 30s with the turn of the year at midnight. Temperatures would continue to plunge, and by daybreak to an hour or two after daybreak reached their lowest points, ranging from the upper 20s in colder spots of the South Texas Brush Country to the lower and mid 30s across the Rio Grande Valley. The low temperatures were joined by very light precipitation, which fell in the form of light sleet and freezing drizzle near Hebbronville early on the 1st but with no known significant impact.
