Event narrative

Snowfall totals across the county include 3.5 inches one mile west-southwest of Bastian, 4.0 inches one mile west of Rocky Gap, three miles southwest of Long Spur, and one mile north-northeast of Ceres.

Wider weather episode

An area of low pressure tracked northeast along the U.S. east coast. Ample moisture wrapped westward around this low where it encountered temperatures cold enough at all levels of the atmosphere to produce widespread snowfall. Storm total snowfall amounts averaged four to six inches across two distinct bands of Virginia. The one band covered parts of the Mountain Empire, New River Valley, Upper Roanoke River Valley, an western sections of Southside Virginia. The other band stretched from the southern Alleghany Highlands southeast into the Lower James River Valley region near Lynchburg. Isolated higher amounts near seven inches occurred across portions of the Grayson Highlands and also over Bath County.
