Trees were blown down and quarter inch hail was reported north of Oriental.
Wider weather episode
Scattered to numerous thunderstorms developed over Eastern North Carolina during the afternoon and evening hours. Some of these storms became severe with large hail and damaging winds. An upper level trough of low pressure and strong shear combined with strong instability over the area to produce the severe thunderstorms.
