Lake-Effect Snow — Northern Erie, Pennsylvania
2019-01-24 to 2019-01-25 · Northern Erie, Pennsylvania
Event narrative
An area of low pressure over Lake Huron on the evening of January 24, moved east of the Great Lakes region. Arctic air and westerly flow behind the system settled in over the Lake Erie basin and allowed for lake effect snow showers to develop over northwest Pennsylvania late on the 24th into the 25th. By daybreak, these lake effect snow showers became more organized over the Erie County, PA lakeshore areas as a single band of lake effect snow with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour. This band persisted through the morning hours on the 25th before lifting offshore over Lake Erie by the early afternoon hours. Snow during this event mainly impacted the northern half of Erie County. A maximum total of 8 inches of snow fell in Harborcreek. Erie International Airport measured just over 6 inches of snow during the event. A spotter in North East measured 7 inches of snow. Lesser amounts of 3 to 5 inches were recorded in Lake City and Millcreek Township.
