Event narrative
Accumulating ice had many roads impassable. Many vehicles were abandoned. Spotty power outages were also observed.
Wider weather episode
An area of low pressure moved through Kentucky bringing a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to central Indiana on January 19th. Warm air above the ground caused more freezing rain to fall than expected in some areas, cutting down snow totals. An upper level component to the storm brought a band of heavy snow across mainly southern sections of the area later in the afternoon into the evening. Winds gusting to over 40 mph later in the day brought white-out conditions to parts of the area.
