Unseasonably cold air combined with gusty northwest winds in the wake of a cold front to produce very low wind chills in the high elevations of the North Carolina mountains during the night of the 5th into the morning of the 6th. Air temperatures in the teens and winds gusting to 20 to 30 mph generally produced wind chill values of -5 to -10 in areas above 3500 feet. However, locations above 5000 feet, where air temperatures dropped to as low as 0 and where winds gusted to 40 mph or higher, saw wind chills as low as -30.
