Heavy Snow — Northern Franklin, Maine

2019-11-24 to 2019-11-25 · Northern Franklin, Maine

Event narrative

By midday on the 24th precipitation overspread the western Maine mountains. Strong lift helped cool a marginal air mass so that any rain or mix flipped to moderate to heavy snow in the afternoon and evening. This was especially true where easterly flow was upsloping into the higher terrain. Total snow accumulations were generally in the 6 to 10 inch range on the east side of the terrain, and 4 to 6 inches on the western side.

Wider weather episode

Low pressure meandered into the Ohio River Valley on the evening of the November 23rd and began to weaken as secondary development took place over coastal North Carolina. This secondary area of low pressure then rapidly strengthened on the 24th and spread rain and snow over northern New England. Late on the evening of the 24th an upstream shortwave kicked the storm out to sea, limiting the overall duration of snow in the mountains.
