Event narrative
Observer roughly twenty some miles north of Harrison reported blizzard conditions with snow drifting into 5 to 8 foot piles. A Nebraska Department of Roads sensor along Highway 71 at the South Dakota and Nebraska state line had persistent wind speeds into the upper 40 mph range.
Wider weather episode
A powerful low pressure system tracked into the central Great Plains producing a tight pressure gradient and trowal winter precipitation that produced blizzard or near-blizzard conditions and high winds throughout the Panhandle. Peak wind gusts were measured into the upper 60 mph range with several drifts exceeding two feet across Sioux, Dawes, and Box Butte Counties.
