Wider weather episode
A strong cold front swept through West Virginia on the evening of February 26, ushering in much colder air down from the Great Lakes in its wake. Rain showers and embedded thunderstorms quickly changed over to snow on the morning of the 27th, resulting in snowfall amounts of 6 to 12 inches across the West Virginia mountains. The snow, windy conditions, and rain that fell ahead of it and then froze, resulted in slick driving conditions in the mountain counties. This prompted multiple school closures in West Virginia.
